Trading Bias14 minThe 1%: What Profitable Traders Actually Do (Spoiler: Not Candlestick Patterns)
I tested 200+ strategies. Most were technical analysis. The data broke my assumptions.
Honest trading research
Three lenses. 10 methodology biases that lie to you through your backtest. 1 meta-bias sitting under all of them. 6 behavioral biases that fire when real money is on the line. Every one defeated with real data and real case studies.
Before anything else
Every one of these 17 biases applies to us too. The meta-bias especially, the one where every backtest silently assumes the future will resemble the past. We cannot escape it. Neither can you.
What we CAN do is three things, and we commit to all three.
The complete field guide in one PDF: 10 backtest traps, 1 meta-bias under all of them, and 12 behavioral biases that make you override the bot. Condensed from my 200-strategy test and six years of live bots.

How I watched my colleague Sandra's backtest print +510% — then shrank to +28% when I tested it honestly.
Part I · 10 Methodology Biases
Before the market can beat you, your own backtest will. These ten biases are the reason most published returns are fiction.
Plus 5 methodology extensions: Beat HODL · Parameter Robustness · Benchmark Tunnel Vision · Sharpshooter Post-Mortem · Methodology page →
Part II · The Meta-Bias · Applies to ALL of the above
Even a backtest that passes all 10 methodology checks above is still testing on historical data. The future is a regime we haven't fully observed. Walk-forward catches regimes we've seen. It cannot catch regimes that haven't happened yet.
Hume called it the induction problem. Taleb called it the turkey problem. We call it the bias under all the others.
One bias per article. Real case studies. Honest data.

Trading Bias8 minHume, Taleb's turkey, and the meta-bias that sits under walk-forward, parameter sweeps, and every other test we run.
Trading Bias5 minA strategy tested on sunny days only. Then winter comes. Then your portfolio dies.
Trading Bias10 minAt 55% win rate, 3-win streaks happen 17% of the time. Your brain reads them as mastery. Your account pays for the size-up that follows.
Trading Bias5 minThe math says if you test 20 strategies, one looks significant by pure chance. That one is usually what gets published.
Trading Bias9 minTversky-Kahneman 1974. Every ATH becomes an anchor. Your brain hunts discounts against phantom reference points — and pays a real tax.
Trading Bias9 minBybit pushes "MACD trendshift" to millions simultaneously. By the time you tap BUY, you're providing exit liquidity. Math, behavior, mute strategy.
Trading Bias12 minMy February 2021 journal said 'SELL'. I held until late 2023. Cost: $140,000 realized + $180,000 opportunity. The anatomy of a trapped bag.
Trading Bias5 minThe winners get published. The losers get deleted. A confession, and the cure.

Trading Bias9 minThe 2:1 pain asymmetry that Kahneman and Tversky documented — and how Odean found it draining 4.4% per year from retail accounts.
Trading Bias12 minYour backtest is honest. Your trading is chaos. Here are the 12 biases that make real-money decisions different from paper ones.
Part III · 6 Behavioral Biases
Methodology biases break your backtest. Behavioral biases break your live trading. Loss aversion, FOMO, sunk cost, anchoring, overconfidence, the broker-signal trap.
Extension · The Hidden Taxes
The 17 biases above explain why your backtest lies and why your brain fights you. The Hidden Taxes series extends the framework with the two costs most traders never calculate: the hourly wage of their own time, and the psychological pull toward short-term wins.
What we do about our own biases
We can't be bias-free. We can document our failures. Every strategy that looked great until we ran the honest version gets a page. Every bot we retired gets a date. Because the signal value of a site you can trust comes from seeing the losses.
